Childhood Injury Prevention Month By Your Favorite Mebane N C OrthodontistSeptember marks the beginning of an exciting time of year. Children are heading back to school after a summer of fun and relaxation, and they are gearing up to learn new things and try new activities. Many kids are beginning fall sports, which is an awesome way to stay fit, active and healthy while also learning important life skills. At the same time, however, this is a common time of year for facial injuries and mouth injuries. September is National Childhood Injury Prevention Month, and our Mebane orthodontist want to remind active young people to always wear a mouth guard when participating in any sport!

3 Reasons To Wear A Mouth Guard

  • Each year, more than 7 million young people between the ages of 5 and 24 sustain an injury while playing sports or participating in recreational activities. These injuries can happen on the ball field or on the playground, and they all can result in damage that requires additional orthodontic treatment or dental work.
  • More than 70 percent of parents say that their largest concern about their children participating in sports is that they will sustain an injury. Even though most parents are concerned about sports-related injuries, many do not have their children wear mouth guards while they are enjoying their favorite sport.
  • About 80 percent of injuries that occur while playing sports result in a trip to the local emergency room. This means that many sports-related injuries are serious, and require quick medical treatment. By wearing a mouth guard, many of the mouth and facial injuries can be prevented!

Unfortunately, most coaches and sports leagues do not require that children use mouth guards when they participate in a sport. Even if your child is part of a contact sport that does not require a mouth guard, it is still the best and safest option for them! Make sure that your child has a mouth guard that fits well, as it will help protect them from injury and prevent further damage that may require additional orthodontic work.
